We arrived at Fish and Field at 8pm in Friday and were surprised that there were only two couples in the place which was attractive and welcoming.
Our host seemed almost surprised that we were there.
The appetizers were good and my wife's fillet of steak was also well prepared.
The meal fell apart with my Dover Sole. It was offered as a daily special but when I ordered it my host asked if I wanted it deboned as this would be easier for the chef. This surprised me as deboning is usually done after cooking and is certainly not easier for the chef.
I understood when what arrived were four small fillets that were old, flavorless and certainly not a featured special.
When I told the host that everything was good apart from the fish he offered no words of concern but stated that the fish was fresh that morning. I have eaten many pieces of fish in my lifetime and those sad, tasteless,unflaky pieces were certainly NOT fresh that morning.
After this our host studiously avoided us and only brought the bill when we had put our coats on and were ready to leave. I guess we now know why so few people were there.
A poor piece of fish can be excused but vulgar, inhospitable service cannot.
